School Council

At Shirehampton Primary School, we believe that children should have a voice in the decisions that affect them and their school.

Our School Council gives children the opportunity to share their ideas, listen to the views of others and work together to make positive changes within our school community.

Representatives are elected by their classmates and play an important role in making sure that children's views are heard.

 What Does Our School Council Do?

Our School Council represents the views and ideas of children across Shirehampton Primary School.

School Council representatives:

• Listen to the views and ideas of their classmates
• Bring suggestions and questions to School Council meetings
• Discuss ways we can make our school even better
• Help plan and support projects and activities
• Share information from meetings with their classes
• Encourage children across the school to have their say
• Help children understand that their ideas and opinions can make a difference

Through their role, representatives develop important skills including communication, teamwork, listening, decision-making and responsibility.

This captures the useful parts of your current aims without the very long lists about citizenship, mediation, budgeting, consensus and so on.

 How Does School Council Work?

School Council representatives are elected by their classmates.

Children who would like to become a representative have the opportunity to put themselves forward and share why they would be a good representative for their class.

School Council meetings take place throughout the year. Representatives bring ideas and feedback from their classes to meetings and then share what has been discussed when they return to class.

This helps create a link between individual classes and the whole-school council, ensuring that children across the school have opportunities to contribute their ideas.

We want children at Shirehampton to know that their views matter.

School Council is one of the ways children can contribute to the development of their school. Representatives gather the views of their classmates and bring their ideas, suggestions and concerns to meetings.

Where possible, children are encouraged to be involved in finding solutions and turning their ideas into action.

Not every suggestion will be possible, but we believe it is important that children understand that their views will be listened to and considered.
